Sport & Recreation
The Yass Valley has some of the best sporting and recreational facilities in the region which cater to a wide variety of sporting clubs.
Joe O'Connor Park
Joe O'Connor Park is located behind Yass Public School with entry off Laidlaw Street, Yass. A number of local sporting clubs call Joe O'Connor Park home, including the Yass Netball Association, Basketball, Yass Roos AFC and the Yass District Cricket Association. The facilities at Joe O'Connor Park include an oval, cricket pitch, seven surfaced netball courts, one bitumen basketball court, two cricket nets and a boat ramp into the Yass River. Four netball courts were resurfaced with new acrylic playing surface and LED lighting was installed in 2016. The amenities building includes a canteen, change rooms, showers and toilets (including disabled access) and referee rooms.
Victoria Park
Victoria Park is located in Laidlaw Street, Yass and is home to the Yass Rams Rugby Union Club in winter and the Yass District Cricket Association over summer. Victoria Park is also widely used by local schools and community organisations to host events such as school athletics carnivals and Christmas Carols. Facilities include an oval, cricket pitch and recently upgraded amenities. The renovations, which were completed in April 2018, included knocking down the separate canteen ‘shed’, with the existing building being extended to include a new meeting room, storage room, disabled toilet and canteen. Stage two of the upgrades will see both the change rooms and public toilets undergo refurbishment. Grant opportunities for stage two are currently being reviewed, with project dates not yet determined by Council.
Walker Park
Walker Park is home to a number of sporting clubs in Yass, including the Yass Magpies Rugby League Club, Yass Minor Rugby League, Yass Football Club and Yass Touch Football Association. Junior and senior teams utilise the six playing fields for all home games. Walker Park also hosts the popular Yass Touch Knockout in January each year with teams travelling from all over the country to compete. Facilities include two amenities buildings with canteens, change rooms, toilets and showers, referee rooms and floodlighting.
Yass Valley Council adopted the Walker Park Strategic Plan in March 2018, following an extended period of consultation with the community and local sporting clubs. The final Walker Park Strategic Plan, which highlights the need for significant upgrades to one of Yass’s most heavily used sporting facilities, has taken into consideration comments raised in submissions received from the community while the draft was on public exhibition between December 2017 and January 2018. The document outlines a proposed priority program for development of the site as a regional sporting facility. It will enable Council to meet the needs of user groups and provide a basis for future grant funding applications.
