Trees on Council Land

We as a Council value our street and reserve trees as they improve our urban environment, provide shade and habitat and assist in air purification.

Council proactively and reactively manages trees located on land managed by Council, such as maintained roads, urban streets, parks and natural areas.

All routine maintenance tasks carried out on trees in public spaces are carried out by a qualified Council worker or a Council appointed contractor.

Maintenance tasks consist of tree pruning and related activities for risk mitigation, improving tree health and structure, maintaining clearance zones for buildings, pedestrians and vehicular traffic.

We may prune or remove a tree if it is:

  • presenting a risk, including dead, dying or dangerous trees
  • affected by a disease or pest
  • approved as part of a planning permit
  • to meet statutory requirements, for example power line clearance.

The draft 2025/26 Operational plan has proposed funding to undertake the development of a Tree Management Strategy which would include a Street Tree Planting and Removal Policy. This is subject to Council resolving to proceed with this project at its ordinary meeting to be held on the 23 June 2025.
