What is Sustainability?

Environmental sustainability is making decisions and actions that are in the interests of protecting the natural world, with particular emphasis on preserving the capability of the environment to support human life.

Sustainability broadly includes:

  • Living within the limits of what the environment can provide.
  • Understanding the many interconnections between economy, society and the environment.
  • The equal distribution of resources and opportunities.

How can you be more sustainable?

Sustainability provides a way for us to achieve environmental, economic and social outcomes, without limiting resources for future generations.

How can Council be more sustainable?

Environmental Sustainability Policy
In 2014, Council adopted their Environmental Sustainability Policy. This policy is a commitment to all Council decisions and actions being considered in light of their environmental impact on present and future generations.

These commitments are also reflected in the "Our Environment" strategies in our Regional Community Strategic Plan, which was adopted in 2016 and can be viewed here.

Carbon Footprint
Yass Valley Council has committed to reducing its carbon footprint.
Council’s role may be:

  • To develop initiatives that aim to reduce Council’s carbon footprint through internal procurement processes.
  • To support residents, businesses and industry in reducing their carbon footprints in their homes, businesses, and lifestyle choices.

  • Develop or maintain walking and cycling paths and facilities to encourage active transport.

  • Support the development of renewable energy facilities where appropriate in the region.
