Yass Valley Council's Road Safety Officer (RSO) works alongside the Roads & Maritime Service (RMS) to deliver locally focused Road Safety Campaigns and to address the traffic concerns of the local community.

One of the major responsibilities is to research, develop and deliver Yass Valley's Road Safety Action Plan 2018 -2019, using data collected by the RMS. The RSO works closely with organisations that contribute to road safety including, community stakeholders, community groups, local health and Police.

Local road safety issues

RMS data shows that over the last five years the two major causes of casualty crashes in the Yass Valley are:

  1. Speeding
  2. Fatigue

Road safety programs delivered by the Yass Valley RSO include:

  • Providing advice in relation to traffic, pedestrian and bicycle matters.
  • The 'Helping Learner Drivers Become Safer Drivers' course, a program delivered twice a year and aims to up-skill supervisors of learner drivers.
  • '65 Plus' program is a road safety workshop for seniors run twice per year.
  • Source funding to implement the Yass Valley Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan (PAMP) and Yass Bike Plan (see below in Related Documents).
