Am I eligible to apply for a position at Council?

Council positions are subject to relevant pre-employment checks. The candidate must be:

  • an Australian citizen or permanent resident or New Zealand citizen or hold a valid visa with permission to work in Australia.
  • willing to complete an Identity Check – supplying 100 points of identification for verification.
  • willing to complete an integrity/criminal history check.

 

Am I eligible to apply if I am living overseas?

Council often receives applications from candidates outside Australia. The candidate must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident or New Zealand citizen or hold a valid visa with permission to work in Australia. The onus is on you to demonstrate proof of the right to work in Australia.

How do I apply for a position I have seen advertised?

All candidates must submit their application online on the Yass Valley Council website or via Seek. The candidate must address the essential requirements questions and upload a current copy of their resume.

Applicants that have applied for a position with Council online before, should use their previous login details to access their profile and apply for a position.

 

What do I do if I have forgotten my password?

On the application login screen, the candidate can enter their email address that they created a candidate profile with and click ‘forgot password’.

The candidate will be emailed an automatically generated password and link to reset their password.

 

I am having trouble uploading my application. What do I do?

Call Council’s Human Resources team on 6226 9251 who can assist the candidate with their online application.

 

 

What If I have never worked?

The candidate can consider how their life experience may relate. They may have volunteered or been part of a sporting group. The candidate may be able to highlight the tasks, skills or achievements developed to address the essential requirements.

 

 

I am interested in more than one position. Should I apply for them all?

Applicants are encouraged to apply for positions that match their skills, qualifications, and experience. It is important that candidates check the position description and can demonstrate their ability to meet the essential requirements for each position being applied for.

 

 

Do you accept late applications?

Ensure the job application is submitted online before the closing date. Applications close at 11:59pm on the closing date.

 

 

How long after submitting my application will I hear from you?

Once the candidate has submitted their application, they will receive an automated email confirming their application has been received. Please check your junk mail or spam folder if an email has not been received within 48 hours.

The recruitment process time can vary; however, Council will keep candidates informed about their progress.

 

 

Do I need to do an integrity/criminal history check?

Prior to commencement the preferred candidate will receive an email with instructions to complete an integrity/criminal history check (also known as a National Police Check).

 

 

Do I need a Driver’s Licence for the position?

If a Driver’s Licence is required for the position, it will be specified in the essential requirements.

 

 

Will I need to provide copies of my qualifications, registration or licences?

If an essential requirement of the position, candidates must provide evidence of qualifications, registration or licences in the onboarding process.

 

 

Do I need to do a pre-employment medical?

Some positions that are more physically or psychosocially demanding require preferred applicants to complete a pre-employment medical assessment. Pre-employment medicals may involve testing vision and hearing, spirometry, drug and alcohol testing and fitness testing. Examples of positions that require a pre-employment medical include labourers, truck drivers and transfer station operators. Roles that require a pre-employment medical will state this in the job advertisement.

 

 

Am I required to provide documents to verify my Identification?

The preferred candidate must complete an identity check – supplying 100 points of identification for verification consisting of Primary and Secondary documents.

Can I receive feedback if my application is unsuccessful?

Candidates can request feedback by emailing HR@yass.nsw.gov.au

 

 

Interviews

I am coming for an interview. What should I wear?

It is recommended that the candidate wears appropriate clothing suitable to the position being applied for. For example, business attire for office-based roles.

How many interviews can I expect?

Generally, Council convenes one interview per position, however for some roles within the organisation there may be a requirement for additional interviews or formal meetings with key personnel.

How long will the Interview take?

Interviews are normally scheduled for between 30 – 45 minutes depending on the position applied for.

What type of interview should I prepare for?

The HR Team will provide information on what to expect at interview and provide candidates the necessary time to prepare before an interview. Most interviews involve meeting with a panel of Council staff and answering a range of questions related to the position's selection criteria.

If I am running late or cannot attend an interview, who do I notify?

Can my interview be held via Microsoft Teams?

A face-to-face interview is preferred, however a Microsoft Teams interview may be scheduled in exceptional circumstances. If the preferred candidate attended via Microsoft Teams, it is recommended a 2nd interview is held face to face.

I was unsuccessful at the interview stage. How long until I can apply for another role?

Candidates can apply immediately for positions advertised on Council’s website. Generally, it is recommended that candidates consider the feedback received after interview before applying.
