Council Statement on Fuel Security Challenges

In response to the current fuel supply challenges, Yass Valley Council would like to reassure residents that Council remains focused on keeping essential services running smoothly through the Easter holiday period and beyond.

For now, Council services remain business as usual. Yass Valley Council has been strategically considering service and community priorities, while actively preparing for potential impacts.

Council currently holds approximately 49,000 litres of diesel in storage - enough to sustain around two months of standard operations. This ensures that key services such as waste collection, road grading and mowing can continue without disruption.

As part of its broader Business Continuity Planning, Council is preparing and planning for potential short and long-term fuel impacts focusing on service priorities and identifying suitable mitigation measures that can be put in place to ensure Council services are maintained wherever possible (similar to the planning that took place during COVID). This will ensure that fuel supplies can be re-allocated where they are most needed.

Yass Valley Mayor Jasmin Jones recently joined more than 120 Mayors and Council Executives from across New South Wales for a briefing coordinated by Local Government NSW. Key advocacy areas included strengthening emergency preparedness, addressing the financial impacts on disaster-related road works, supporting farmers, ensuring reliable fuel deliveries to regional service centres, and relief for essential services such as waste collection.
