Natural Resource Management

Yass Valley Council is wholly within the upper Murrumbidgee Catchment. The Yass River Catchment is the major sub-catchment in the Yass Valley Council area. Other sub-catchments that are partly within Yass Valley are the Burrinjuck Reservoir and Goodradigbee River catchments.

Council is working with a number of local and regional organisations such as the Upper Murrumbidgee Catchment Network and Landcare, as well as State and Federal departments including the NSW Department of Planning and Environment and the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH).

Yass Valley Council is a member of the ACT & Region Catchment Management Coordination Group. This group is an inter-jurisdictional coordination body committed to strengthening governance and catchment management in the ACT and surrounding regions for the long-term benefit of the ACT and Region catchment and the people who reside therein. We recommend your visit their website where you can read more about the Group's activities, including the ACT & Region Catchment Strategy.

Yass Valley Council carries out monthly water monitoring at designated points on the Yass River as part of the Upper Murrumbidgee Waterwatch program. This information contributes to the annual Waterwatch report about water quality in the Upper Murrumbidgee catchment.

NSW Local Land Services (LLS) is responsible for delivering services that add value to local agricultural industries, enhance natural resources, protect industries from pests and disease and help communities respond to emergencies like flood, fire and drought. LLS covers the core activities previously performed by Catchment Management Authorities, Livestock Health and Pest Authorities, and parts of the NSW Department of Primary Industries. The Yass Valley LGA is located within the South East LLS Region.

Local Land Services consult with local communities, including landholders and Aboriginal groups, to develop strategies for natural resource management in the region. Local Land Services has a Local Strategic Plan which aligns with the statewide vision, goals and strategies for Local Land Services and outlines priorities for the region. The South East Local Strategic Plan 2016-2021 can be accessed below.
