Water Quality

The palatability of Yass water is a major issue being addressed by Yass Valley Council. The water supply is safe to consume but is affected by water hardness, dissolved solids and high organic matter, iron and manganese, which affects the taste and colour.

National Association of Testing Authorities, Australia (NATA)

Council has recently engaged a NATA facility in Canberra to conduct weekly tests for the presence of Giardia and Cryptosporidium in Council’s water supply. This is in addition to the required testing under the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines to again reassure our community that the water supply is safe to consume despite the recent increase in discolouration and odour.

Weekly water quality reports

Drinking water quality is monitored in accordance with the Framework for Management of Drinking Water Quality in the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (ADWG) and in compliance with the NSW Public Health Act 2010

Operational monitoring is carried-out daily at the Yass Water Treatment Plant. Verification monitoring is to ensure safety of water, samples are tested weekly for microbiological parameters and monthly for chemical and physical parameters at the NSW Health Laboratory.

Iron and manganese are present in the Yass water supply and can cause discolouration. Removal of iron and manganese at the Yass Water Treatment Plant are monitored and weekly summaries are provided below.
