All cats and dogs, other than exempt cats and dogs, must be registered by six months of age. The registration fee is a once-only payment, which covers the cat or dog for its lifetime in NSW, regardless of any changes in ownership. As of 1 July 2020 the NSW Government has introduced a new permit system. Cats from 4 months of age that are not desexed, and dogs declared Dangerous or Restricted dogs will need to purchase an annual permit in addition to the lifetime registration fee.
More information on annual permits can be obtained from www.olg.nsw.gov.au.
All cats and dogs in NSW must be micro-chipped by 12 weeks of age or before being sold or given away, whichever happens first.
