Australia’s best to spend Australia Day in Yass Valley

Arguably Australia’s best ever female water polo player, Debbie Watson OAM will be Yass Valley’s Australia Day Ambassador for the community breakfast in Coronation Park on Friday 26th January 2018.

With a water polo career spanning 17 years Debbie came out of retirement when the sport was included in the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, helping the women’s team claim the gold medal.

“Winning a gold medal at an Olympic Games on home soil was truly my greatest sporting achievement,” said Miss Watson OAM. “Sport has brought so many amazing opportunities into my life and I love continuing to spread the message about health, wellbeing and the importance of physical education.”

Away from water polo Debbie is now teaching personal development, health and physical education at MacKellar Girls High School. Debbie has been recognised for her commitment to Australian sport by receiving nominations and awards such as; the Prime Ministerial award for her services to water polo, NSW Sports Women of the Year, NSW Sports Person of the year and Citizen of the Year.

“Debbie’s commitment to her sport and her unwavering determination to achieve her goals will be a truly inspirational story to hear at our official Australia Day event in Yass,” said Yass Valley Mayor, Rowena Abbey. “Our community looks forward to warmly welcoming Debbie, as well as our new citizens and congratulating our local Australia Day Award recipients.”

Yass Valley celebrations for Australia Day will kick off with a community breakfast in Coronation Park from 8-9.30am. Volunteers from Yass Rotary Club will be running the BBQ for a gold coin donation, with Yass Lions organising a jumping castle for the kids and Maisie’s Choir providing entertainment for the adults.
