Library Chit Chat - 28 October 2009

Last modified: October 28, 2009 - 10:40 AM

Great Reads for Junior Readers

The value of children reading and being read to is often underestimated. Reading is a skill that allows children to succeed at school and boosts their self-confidence. For a child to become a good reader requires continual reading at home from an early age.

The Yass Library has a range of books to cater for all young readers:

Board Books - are a great way to introduce books to babies. They are smaller then the standard size book and have less pages. Board books are made of cardboard making it easier for babies to turn the page and to hold.

Junior Easies - are a range of picture books usually aimed at young children up to 7 or 8 years of age. They come in a range of shapes and sizes and appeal to all children with the wide variety of themes covered in the books. Pirates, dinosaurs, farm animals, insects and dragons are just a few of the popular themes covered in picture books. Parents will also find books to help their child learn concepts like numbers, alphabet and to explain new experiences like a new baby or the death of a family pet.

Leap Frog - is a collection of beginner readers for children who are becoming independent readers. The books in this collection range from one word per page and one sentence per page to short chapter books. There is also a range of non-fiction titles to appeal to children who want a change from a fiction book. Popular series included in the Leap Frog collection include Aussie Bites, Aussie Nibbles and Aussie Chomps.

Junior Fiction - is a collection of novels for the very independent reader and are aimed at children up to 12 and 13 years of age. In this collection children will find modern authors including Duncan Ball, Anna Fienberg, Paul Jennings and Brain Jacques as well as classic authors including L.M Montgomery, Enid Blyton and P.L Travers.

For further information about library resources for young people please come in and talk to library staff.
