Murrumbateman Landfill Proposal - Update

Last modified: September 4, 2009 - 5:25 PM

Murrumbateman landfill is currently licensed by the Department of Environment and Climate Change(DECC) to accept asbestos materials, and under the license there is a 5000 tonne per annum limit on the amount of waste that can be received.

A recent proposal for Council to accept a large quantity of contaminated waste at Murrumbateman landfill will not proceed. The proposal included accepting waste from a site within the ACT.

A detailed investigation has been undertaken by Council to determine approval and licensing requirements. It is likely that the approval process would not meet the desired timeframe fro removal of the material and as such the contractor will explore other options.

The proposal would have generated significant income for Council which could have been used to undertake much needed projects within the Murrumbateman area.

Enquiries in relation to this issue can be directed to Yass Valley Council 6226 1477.
