Discovering the possibilities for our future parks and playgrounds

Parks and playgrounds are an essential aspect to any community’s landscape, providing physical activity as well as socialisation for people of all ages. Yass Valley Council has proudly achieved many of the actions and priorities from the 2014 Parks & Playgrounds Strategy and are now inviting the community to actively participate in the development of our next five year Strategy.

“Our future Strategy needs to be all encompassing, providing for all age groups and all abilities,” said Councillor Jasmin Jones. “We want to investigate the inclusion of additional equipment like BBQs and picnic areas to make our parks more of a social hub, as well as items such as, handball courts or a netball ring to increase the usability of playgrounds for all ages.”

A draft Strategy has been developed and aims to identify the provision of playgrounds at various parks across the Yass Valley LGA and sets priorities for the upgrade and replacement of current playgrounds. The draft Strategy categorises where key facilities are located and provides a hierarchy to ensure parks and playgrounds are developed sustainably and that maintenance and renewal is achieved.

“This equipment has a lifespan of up to two decades, so the decisions we make today will affect future generations of families in Yass Valley,” continued Councillor Jones. “We want the community actively involved in this project and not just the mums and dads, we need grandparents and carers all having their say.”
