Community Groups

There are several community groups in the Yass Valley who focus on looking after our natural environment.

  • Yass Community Garden:
  • Yass Area Network of Landcare Groups: is a collective organisation made up of the landcare groups in the Yass region of NSW. Their mission is to facilitate the development of landcare in the region and represent regional landcare with regional, Government and private industry stakeholders. The ten Landcare Groups that own and are represented by YAN are: Bungendore, Bookham, Collector, Geary’s Gap / Wamboin, Gundaroo, Jerrawa Creek, Murrumbateman, Sutton, Taylor’s Creek and Yass. The YAN facebook page advertises events for all of these landcare groups.
  • Yass Landcare Group: focuses on biodiversity and sustainable production. The Group covers the area from Wee Jasper to the Yass area, including the Yass River. They have monthly meetings with a guest speaker. The group has regular events where members can learn more about Landcare on ground, including farm walks and field days. The Yass Landcare Group are working on the construction of a Community Nursery behind the Men’s Shed in Yass. Secretary: Jan Grubb, or 6227 1389.
  • Sutton Landcare Group: The philosophy at Sutton Landcare is to improve the natural environment by ensuring that all members are fully informed on the principles of sustainable environmental management and how to implement them.  Armed with the right knowledge we, as private land-owners, can ensure that we manage our own properties in accord with sound environmental practices.  We can also make intelligent comment to the relevant authorities on the stewardship of publicly-owned land in our community. Landcare meetings are held at Sutton Public School, normally on the second Tuesday of each even-numbered month. For general inquiries about Sutton Landcare meetings, please contact the Secretary: Marchien van Ooestende - or President: David Vincent or 6230 3584
  • Bowning/Bookham Landcare Group: The Bowning and Bookham Districts Landcare Group was established in 2013 to foster land conservation in the area surrounding the towns of Bowning and Bookham in the Southern Tablelands of NSW. The group meets every month at the Bowning Hotel for dinner followed by a meeting. New members welcome! President: Tony Folkard - or 02 6227 6439.
  • Binalong Landcare Group: has regular events focusing on sustainable farming and conserving the local environment. Contact: Jim McDonald - or 0407 263 115.
